Department of Medical Education, Jorhat Medical College

The Sojourn of NMC Regional Centre for Faculty Development, Jorhat.

In quest for Newer Horizons through Sublime Transformation

The beginning ……..

Faculty development in the field of Medical Education in the Medical Colleges of Assam.

In the early 1980s, tremendous activities were on in the country in context of Medical Education.  The Medical Colleges in Assam also came into the folds of the tide. During this period, several teachers from Assam were sent to NTTC (National Teachers Training Centre) at Banaras Hindu University to pursue the 6-10 days rigorous training in medical education.

After a gap Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) was designated as the Regional Centre for the then existing Medical Colleges of Assam.

During 2010, teachers from Silchar Medical College (SMC), Assam Medical College (AMC) and Gauhati Medical College (GMC) were sent to attend the MCI recognized 3 Days Basic Course Workshop in Medical Education Technology.

In 2011, few enthusiastic faculties from the new Medical College at Jorhat were also sent to MAMC, New Delhi to attend the Basic Course Workshop (BCW).

The transition from MEU to MED- the birth of the Regional Centre.

After the required number (8 no.) of faculties got trained in Basic Course at the Regional Centre, the MEU of JMC pioneered conducting the Basic course workshop in 2013 and 2014.

. Besides the teachers’ training courses, JMC also ventured into other faculty development activities like having a fully functional MEU, conducting microteaching session for student-teachers’(Post graduates), Internship Orientation Programme, Capacity building workshop on Medical Humanities for Students and faculty, introducing medical ethics in curriculum, sensitization lecture on ATCOM module, etc.

An advocacy meeting of all stake holders in the medical education was held in Guwahati in April 2017 for upliftment of the medical education scenario in the region. Leading educationist, directorate of medical education, MEU faculty deliberated in the meeting.

A feather in the cap during that year was the successful organization of the National Conference of Health Professionals Educators’ (NCHPE) held in November 2017 at Jorhat Medical College. It was the first NCHPE to be held in the entire eastern India.

One of the key initiatives of that emerged during that period was the vision to apply for Regional Centre status for Jorhat Medical College. The college was already having MEU faculty who have undergone the necessary training- 6 ACME and 1 FAIMER fellow.

The formal application for RC was given to MCI on December 2017. The assessment for granting RC status was done in August 2018 by Dr M Raj Lakshmi, Consultant, MCI Academic Cell.

Jorhat Medical College was formally accorded the MCI Regional Centre status on 19th of December 2018 vide letter No. MCI-Academics/2018/153905-06, Dated: 19-12-18 during the tenure of former Principal cum Chief Superintendent  Professor Debajit Hazarika.

The MCI Regional Centre- JMC was inaugurated by Professor V.K Paul, Chairman Board of Governers, In Supersession of Medical Council of India In presence of Professor P.V. Vijayaraghavan, Vice Chancellor, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (DU) and the then Principal cum Chief Superintendent  Professor Atul Chandra Baro on 5th of February 2019
