DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE
Welcome to the official page of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, at Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, Jorhat, Assam. Founded in 12th October 2009, the department started with the joining of Dr Humangshu Das as Assisstant Professor. In 2011, Dr. Kanak Chandra Das took charge as Professor and Head till 2020 and presently, the Department is headed by Professor Dipak Kumar Das since January 2023.
Since its inception, the department has come a long way and presently comprising of 7 faculty posts, 2 post graduate trainees each year(which started in the year 2014) having well equipped undergraduate and post graduate laboratories. Besides, it is well supported by laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, office staff. Apart from imparting academics to MBBS Phase II and Phase III part-1 Undergraduate students, the Department also engages in Post-graduate Integrated Seminars, lectures, Workshops in collaboration with other departments. Our faculties are also engaged in different training programme and lectures in the Police training centre, Dergaon.
The department is a proud provider of the medico-legal services for all specialties of the Hospital. Apart from routine Post-mortem examinations, Sexual assault cases examination, Age estimations, Embalming facilities, Toxicological sample collection, DNA sample collection during routine duty hours from 09.00 am to 05.00 pm our Department also provide medico legal services during night hours with permission from appropriate authorities in different law and order situations. Cold storage facilities for dead body preservation is also available in the Department.
